About the Producers

Born from a pharmacist's precision and a nurse's care, Rwanda's Nova Coffee is a mission-driven venture. Founded by Agnes Mukamushinja and Felix Hitayezu, it aims to uplift their community by transforming local farming. Agnes, honoring her agronomist father, revitalized a decrepit washing station in Bukure. Nova is now a women-centered hub, processing coffee for three cooperatives and launching a domestic roast brand. This exceptional natural lot, a first-year success, reflects meticulous drying and the expertise of their dedicated team, including veteran Celeste. Their coffee blends professional rigor with profound social purpose.

What makes this coffee stand out

The Nova Official vision reads, "At Nova Coffee, we envision to drive community socioeconomic welfare through the enhancement of improved coffee farming practices." The Nova Official mission statement reads: "Being a women-centered washing station, Nova Coffee is committed to developing the neighboring community into specialized coffee farmers that produce the highest quality coffee as well as to enhancing the social cohesion in order to create more jobs and eradicate poverty". Nova Coffee is committed to empowering the producers they work with and centering women in their work, which is vital as women coffee producers rarely have access to the same resources that male coffee producers do. Women make up 70% of the coffee production workforce, yet still face discrimination and setbacks. At Driftaway we are committed to purchasing at least 50% of our coffee from women farmers, and do what we can to support operations like Nova in the work that they do.
